Obsession (By My Side) is a new single released on Freshly Squeezed, with The Jam as its B-side. This marks JAWN’s second release under Freshly Squeezed, after his 2016 contribution to the original Blue-Cover Series with That’s All There Is! and The Bastard Duke. Even then, JAWN was already honing in on a fresh new sound, combining a glitchy hip-hop-infused production style with the musicality of vintage remixes.
JAWN has been involved in various bands and musical projects for over a decade, absorbing a range of genres from electro swing to trip-hop and dubstep. His appreciation for the variety of jazz- and swing-influenced music shines through in this new release more than ever.
Obsession (By My Side) sees him borrow singer Alanna Lyes from label-mates GRINNY GRANDAD for a performance as eerie as it is compelling, weaving a tale about the fringes of human intimacy over the ever-shifting tempo of a swing-infused waltz. Coupled with the modern sounds of programmed drums and swells of deep bass, this single makes for an intriguingly left-field addition to the Blue-Cover roster.
The Jam, on the other hand, is a more traditional offering with an arrangement combining classical jazz instrumentation and forward-thinking production, spun around the steady pulsation of an infectious double bass riff. Where Obsession (By My Side) demands more attention and offers surprises in return, The Jam serves as its more dance-able counterpart. Together, we believe they form an excellent pair that we are delighted to share with all of our fans.
This JAWN single is part of the revived Blue-Cover Series 2.0, with future releases planned from the likes of PiSk, K.D.S., CHARLIE BEALE, FAB SAMPERI and others so keep your eyes peeled!
